Complete Packing Checklist for Muktinath Tour

The definitive packing checklist covering every item you need for a comfortable Muktinath pilgrimage.

The definitive packing checklist covering every item you need for a comfortable Muktinath pilgrimage.

Documents & Money

Passport or Voter ID (original plus two photocopies) is the single most important item in your bag. Without it you cannot cross the border or board a domestic flight. Carry four passport-size photographs for the ACAP permit application. Also pack your travel insurance printout, tour booking confirmation email, an emergency contacts list with your guide's number, and a doctor's letter if you carry prescription medications.

Money matters: carry Indian Rupees in INR 100 and INR 200 denominations. INR 500 notes may not be accepted at smaller shops in Nepal. Keep INR 3,125–5,000 in cash for Jomsom and Muktinath where ATMs are unreliable and often run out of cash during peak season. Credit cards work only at a few Pokhara hotels.

Clothing & Footwear Checklist

Follow the three-layer system described in our clothing essentials guide: 2 thermal sets (top + bottom), 1 fleece jacket, 1 down jacket, 2 trek pants, 3 pairs of warm socks, waterproof trekking shoes with ankle support, a beanie or warm cap, insulated gloves, a muffler or neck gaiter, and UV-protection sunglasses. For the 108 Mukti Dhara spouts, pack 1 set of quick-dry light clothes, a medium towel, and a plastic bag for wet garments.

Women should add a dupatta or light scarf for temple modesty after the spout ritual. Total weight target for clothing and footwear: 8-10 kg packed in a medium backpack (40-50 litre) or a small wheeled suitcase. Avoid overpacking. Remember that for flight and helicopter packages you leave your main luggage at the Pokhara hotel and carry only a daypack to Muktinath.

Medicines & Personal Care

Refer to our medical checklist page for the full medicine kit. The quick-reference list: Diamox (acetazolamide. For altitude sickness prevention, consult your doctor for dosage), paracetamol, ORS sachets (6 packets minimum), Imodium for stomach upset, Avomine for motion sickness (essential for the winding mountain roads on jeep packages), adhesive band-aids, sunscreen SPF 50+, lip balm with SPF, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and throat lozenges for the dry mountain air.

Pack all personal prescriptions in their original packaging with a doctor's letter. Nepal customs may question loose pills. Bring three extra days' supply beyond your trip length in case of flight delays or weather-related schedule changes in Jomsom (common during monsoon and winter). A small personal first-aid pouch that fits in your daypack keeps essentials accessible on darshan day.

What to Pack for Each Day of Your Trip

For the most popular flight package (4D/3N): Day 1 (Pokhara arrival). Light travel clothes and a warm layer for the evening Lakeside walk; your main luggage stays at the hotel. Day 2 (Darshan day. Jomsom & Muktinath). This is the critical packing day. Wear thermals under your fleece and down jacket, trekking shoes, and carry a daypack with sunscreen, sunglasses, a change of light clothes and towel for the 108 spouts, puja materials, camera, personal medicines, water bottle, and snacks. Leave the main suitcase at your Pokhara hotel. Day 3 (Pokhara sightseeing). Casual comfortable clothes with walking shoes for Fewa Lake and the caves. Day 4 (Departure). Travel clothes.

Jeep package variation (6D/5N): add swimwear for the Tatopani hot springs stop on Day 2, a dust scarf or buff for the open-jeep stretches between Beni and Jomsom, and note that your heavier luggage travels with you daily in the jeep so you have access to your full bag each night. Helicopter package (same day): pack a single daypack only. Layered clothing, spout clothes, puja items, camera, and medicines. Everything else stays at your Kathmandu or Pokhara hotel. The helicopter has a strict 5-10 kg luggage limit per person.

Electronics & Miscellaneous

Phone with charger and a power bank of at least 10,000 mAh. Charging points in Jomsom and Muktinath lodges are limited and sometimes charge a small fee. Camera for the stunning mountain scenery (photography is allowed in the temple courtyard but not inside the main sanctum). Nepal uses Indian-style Type D round-pin plugs, so Indian travellers do not need an adapter. Carry a refillable water bottle (1 litre) to reduce plastic waste on the trail.

Miscellaneous essentials: energy bars, biscuits, and dry fruits from home. Food options at Muktinath are limited and expensive. A small daypack (20-25 litre) is indispensable for darshan day when your main luggage stays behind. Pack 3-4 plastic bags for separating wet clothes and carrying trash out. Tissue packets and wet wipes for basic hygiene at lodges with shared bathrooms. Sunglasses with UV protection are critical. High-altitude sun reflecting off the barren Mustang landscape is harsh on unprotected eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 40-50 litre backpack or a small wheeled suitcase works best. For flight and helicopter packages, you leave main luggage at the Pokhara hotel and carry only a 20-25 litre daypack to Muktinath. For jeep packages, your luggage travels with you in the vehicle, so a medium suitcase is fine. Avoid large suitcases. Lodge rooms are small and there is no porter service beyond Jomsom.

Carry snacks from India. Food is available at lodges in Jomsom and Ranipauwa, but options are limited to basic dal bhat, noodles, and fried rice. Prices are 2-3 times higher than in Pokhara. Energy bars, dry fruits, biscuits, and instant noodle cups are great backup. Especially for early-morning darshan when lodge kitchens may not yet be open.

Not for our tour packages. All lodges on our itinerary provide bedding (blankets and quilts). However, if you are a cold sleeper visiting in December-February, a lightweight sleeping bag liner adds warmth and hygiene. Our guides carry emergency sleeping bags for high-altitude stops. Independent trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit should carry a sleeping bag rated to -10°C.

Basic hand-wash laundry service is available at some Pokhara hotels and a few Jomsom lodges, but not at Muktinath. Turnaround is usually same-day if you drop clothes by morning. On the trek route, most travellers hand-wash essentials in the lodge basin. Pack quick-dry fabrics to make this easier. Do not count on laundry during the trip. Bring enough clothes for the full duration.

Yes, all hotels on our Pokhara itinerary offer free luggage storage for tour guests. You pack a daypack for the Jomsom-Muktinath portion and collect your main luggage when you return to Pokhara. This is standard practice and completely safe. Hotels keep stored luggage in a locked room. Just make sure valuables like extra cash and passport copies stay with you in the daypack.
