How to Reach via Sonauli Border
The Sunauli (India) – Bhairahawa (Nepal) border crossing is the busiest and most convenient land entry point for Muktinath pilgrims from North India. Located just 90km from Gorakhpur, UP, this crossing puts you on the direct Siddhartha Highway to Pokhara. The gateway to Muktinath.
How to Reach Sonauli Border
Gorakhpur (90 km, 2-3 hours)
Regular buses and shared jeeps run from Gorakhpur Railway Station to Sunauli border. Auto-rickshaws are also available for private transfer. Gorakhpur is well-connected by rail to Delhi (12 hrs), Varanasi (3 hrs), Lucknow (5 hrs), and Mumbai (24 hrs).
Lucknow (300 km, 6-7 hours)
Overnight buses from Lucknow reach Sunauli by early morning. UP State Transport (UPSRTC) and private operators run daily services.
Varanasi (280 km, 6 hours)
Direct buses available from Varanasi to Sunauli. Train to Gorakhpur + bus is another option.
Border Crossing Process
Indian Side (Sunauli): Get exit stamp at Indian Immigration office. Open 24 hours but best crossed between 6 AM – 10 PM.
Walk across: The border is a short walk between the two immigration offices.
Nepal Side (Bhairahawa/Belahiya): Indians don't need a visa. Show Voter ID or Passport at Nepal Immigration for entry stamp.
Documents needed: Valid Voter ID Card OR Passport. Carry 2 passport-size photos.
Currency exchange: Exchange INR at the border. Note: Indian INR 500 and INR 2,000 notes are NOT accepted in Nepal.
Sonauli to Muktinath – Onward Route
Option 1: Sonauli → Pokhara → Jomsom → Muktinath
- Bhairahawa to Pokhara: 200 km, 5-6 hours by tourist bus or private vehicle via Siddhartha Highway
- Pokhara to Jomsom: 25-minute scenic flight or 10-hour jeep ride

- Data packs: 5GB costs ~INR 190-250. Top up at any mobile shop in Pokhara or Jomsom.
- Wi-Fi available in most hotels in Pokhara and Jomsom. Muktinath hotels have basic Wi-Fi.
- Indian SIMs (Jio, Airtel) do not work in Nepal. Activate international roaming only as backup.
- Download offline maps (Google Maps / Maps.me) before entering Nepal. Coverage can be patchy on mountain roads.
