Our team meets you at Rupaidhia-Nepalgunj border. It's a less crowded crossing than Sonauli -faster immigration processing. Hindi and Awadhi are widely spoken in Nepalgunj.

The Long Drive to Pokhara
Day 1 is a 500 km drive from Nepalgunj to Pokhara via Mahendra Highway and Butwal. It's long (10-12 hrs) but scenic. We make regular stops. Alternatively, fly from Nepalgunj to Pokhara in 45 minutes.

Pokhara & Barahi Temple
Day 2 is your rest day in Nepal's most beautiful city. Boat across Phewa Lake to Barahi Temple, visit Davis Falls, and enjoy the Annapurna views. This day recharges you for the mountain journey.

How to Reach via Nepalgunj Border
The Rupaidhia (India) – Nepalgunj (Nepal) border is western Nepal's main crossing point. While less popular than Sonauli for Muktinath pilgrims, it's a viable alternative for travelers from western Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Nepalgunj is also a major domestic flight hub with connections across Nepal.
How to Reach Nepalgunj Border
Lucknow (380 km, 7-8 hours)
Buses and trains from Lucknow to Rupaidhia/Nepalgunj Road station. The nearest Indian railway station is Rupaidiha (also spelled Rupaidhia), on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur line branch.
Varanasi (400 km, 8-9 hours)
Bus via Gorakhpur or direct services to Rupaidhia.
Delhi (700 km, 12-14 hours)
Train to Lucknow or Gorakhpur, then onward bus/train to Rupaidhia.
Border Crossing Process
Indian Side (Rupaidhia): Exit stamp at Indian Immigration office.
Walk across: Short walk to Nepal side. The border area is compact.
Nepal Side (Nepalgunj): Entry stamp at Nepal Immigration. Indians enter visa-free.
Documents needed: Valid Voter ID Card OR Passport with 2 passport-size photos.
Currency exchange: Money changers available in Nepalgunj city (1 km from border).
Nepalgunj to Muktinath – Onward Route
Option 1: Nepalgunj → Pokhara → Jomsom → Muktinath
- Nepalgunj to Pokhara: 500 km, 10-12 hours by bus via Kohalpur and Mahendra Highway, or daily flight (45 minutes)
- Pokhara to Jomsom: 25-minute flight
- Jomsom to Muktinath: 1-hour jeep ride
Option 2: Nepalgunj → Kathmandu → Pokhara → Muktinath
- Nepalgunj to Kathmandu: Daily flights (1 hour) or 12-hour bus
- Then standard Kathmandu → Pokhara → Muktinath route
Recommended: Fly from Nepalgunj to Pokhara (45 min). Saves an entire day compared to the bus.

Everything You Need to Know
- Buy a Nepal SIM at the border. Nepal Telecom (NTC) or Ncell. Cost: ~INR 125 with data pack.
- Nepal Telecom has better coverage in mountain areas (Jomsom, Muktinath). Ncell is better in cities.
- Data packs: 5GB costs ~INR 190-250. Top up at any mobile shop in Pokhara or Jomsom.
- Wi-Fi available in most hotels in Pokhara and Jomsom. Muktinath hotels have basic Wi-Fi.
- Indian SIMs (Jio, Airtel) do not work in Nepal. Activate international roaming only as backup.
- Download offline maps (Google Maps / Maps.me) before entering Nepal. Coverage can be patchy on mountain roads.
Muktinath Temple is at 3,710m (12,172 ft). Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.
- Muktinath sits at 3,710m. Mild altitude sickness is common. Acclimatize in Jomsom (2,720m) before ascending.
- Drink 3-4 litres of water daily starting from Pokhara. Avoid alcohol during the ascent.
- Symptoms to watch: headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath. Descend immediately if symptoms worsen.
- Carry Diamox (Acetazolamide). Consult your doctor before the trip. Available at pharmacies in Pokhara.
- Walk slowly at Muktinath. The 108 spouts and temple area involve short uphill walks at altitude.
- Spend at least one night in Jomsom before going to Muktinath. This helps your body adjust.
