Is Mobile Network Available at Muktinath?

Mobile network at Muktinath is limited but available. NTC (Nepal Telecom) has the best coverage in the Mustang region. Indian SIM cards may have roaming but coverage is unreliable. We recommend buying a local Nepali SIM card in Kathmandu.

NTC vs Ncell: Coverage Comparison in Mustang District

Nepal has two dominant mobile network operators: Nepal Telecom (NTC), the state-owned carrier, and Ncell, a private company. In the Mustang district. Which includes Jomsom, Kagbeni, Jharkot, and Ranipauwa. NTC holds a clear coverage advantage. NTC has installed base stations at Jomsom (2,720m), Kagbeni (2,810m), and Ranipauwa (3,670m) as part of rural connectivity expansion mandated by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). Ncell's coverage in Upper Mustang degrades sharply north of Pokhara and is largely absent above Tatopani.

For voice calls, NTC delivers acceptable quality in Jomsom and Kagbeni. Call quality becomes intermittent at Ranipauwa (the village adjacent to Muktinath temple) and may drop entirely inside the temple complex itself due to the surrounding rock faces. SMS messages tend to arrive with a delay of 5–30 minutes in weak signal zones. This is normal at altitude and should not be mistaken for a total network failure.

Indian mobile operators including Airtel, Jio, Vi, and BSNL offer international roaming in Nepal under their respective plans. Jio's international roaming plan covers Nepal, and Airtel has a bilateral roaming agreement with NTC. However, even with roaming activated, signal at Muktinath altitude is inconsistent. Roaming data speeds are typically 2G (GPRS/EDGE) in the Mustang region. Sufficient for WhatsApp text but not for photo/video sharing or maps with large data pulls.

4G Availability in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality (Muktinath Area)

Muktinath temple sits within Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, Mustang District. NTC has extended its 4G-LTE infrastructure to Jomsom as part of Nepal's Broadband Policy 2015 and subsequent rural rollout phases. As of the NTA Annual Report 2022/23, 4G coverage in Jomsom district headquarters is confirmed. However, the 4G signal attenuates significantly with elevation gain. By the time you reach Ranipauwa at 3,670m, the network typically falls back to 3G (WCDMA/HSPA+) or 2G depending on atmospheric conditions.

On clear days with low wind, some travelers report 4G signal at the Muktinath temple parking area on the NTC network. On overcast or stormy days, connectivity can drop to voice-only 2G. Do not plan any time-sensitive communication (video calls with family, live location sharing) to occur while you are at the temple. Complete these before departing Jomsom in the morning.

Ncell launched its 5G pilot in Kathmandu in 2023 and NTC followed with limited 5G zones in Pokhara in 2024, but neither operator has 5G infrastructure anywhere in the Annapurna Circuit or Mustang region. For practical purposes, assume 3G as the best-case scenario at Muktinath and plan accordingly.

Tourist SIM Purchase Rules: Passport and Photo Required

Foreign nationals, including Indian citizens, may purchase a Nepal Tourist SIM card from NTC or Ncell outlets. The process is straightforward: present your valid passport (not Voter ID. SIM registration requires a machine-readable travel document), one passport-sized photograph, and fill a one-page customer registration form. NTC counters inside Tribhuvan International Airport (domestic and international terminals) are operational from 6 AM to 9 PM. Ncell has a dedicated kiosk in the arrival hall.

An NTC prepaid tourist SIM costs INR 63 for the SIM itself. A standard 10-day data pack with 10 GB data and 100 minutes of local calling costs approximately INR 250–315. Ncell's tourist pack pricing is comparable. Both operators issue the SIM immediately. There is no waiting period, unlike some other countries. Your Indian passport number serves as the KYC (Know Your Customer) identifier and remains linked to the SIM for the duration of your stay.

Recharges (top-up) can be done at any NTC customer care point, grocery shops displaying the NTC or Ncell logo, or via e-banking if you have a Nepali bank account. In Jomsom, one or two small shops sell NTC recharge vouchers. Carry a small recharge voucher from Pokhara as backup. Availability is not guaranteed in smaller settlements along the route.

Data Speeds and What to Expect at Altitude

At Kathmandu and Pokhara, NTC 4G delivers speeds of 10–25 Mbps download in good conditions. Sufficient for HD video, video calls, and navigation. Once you board the Pokhara-to-Jomsom flight and land at Jomsom airport (2,750m), effective speeds drop to 1–5 Mbps at best. Streaming video or downloading large map files in Jomsom is possible but slow. Use your Jomsom hotel's WiFi for heavier data tasks.

Between Jomsom and Ranipauwa (by jeep, approximately 1 hour), the network signal fluctuates. The Kali Gandaki gorge has cliffs on both sides that create dead zones at several points along the road. Your phone will switch between NTC towers and may display "No Signal" for 5–10 minute stretches. This is temporary. Signal returns once the road opens up near Kagbeni and again above Jharkot.

At the Muktinath temple complex itself, data connectivity is very limited. Voice calls are possible with NTC but may require moving to an open area facing south (away from the cliff face). WhatsApp voice notes and text messages will queue and send when signal is momentarily available. For sharing photos with family, do this from Ranipauwa or your hotel after returning from the temple, not inside the complex.

WiFi at Jomsom and Ranipauwa Hotels

Most 2-star and above hotels in Jomsom offer WiFi. Bandwidth is limited. Typically shared VSAT (satellite broadband) at 2–5 Mbps across all rooms. Speeds are noticeably faster in the morning (before 8 AM) and late evening (after 9 PM) when fewer guests are active. Hotel WiFi in Jomsom typically costs INR 63–125 per day or is included in room charges for higher-category hotels.

In Ranipauwa (the settlement directly below Muktinath temple), approximately 4–6 hotels have WiFi as of 2024. The Muktinath Guest House and Hotel North Pole, both popular with Indian pilgrim groups, provide WiFi in the restaurant and reception areas. Room WiFi is less consistent. At an elevation of 3,670m, satellite-based internet is the only viable backhaul. Expect 1–3 Mbps and occasional outages during high winds, which are common in the afternoon.

Download everything you need before leaving Pokhara: Google Maps offline pack for the Mustang region (approximately 120 MB), WhatsApp backup of important contacts, any pilgrimage-related PDFs or temple manuals, and entertainment for the journey. Once above Jomsom, assume data is unavailable rather than available. This mindset prevents frustration and over-reliance on connectivity.

Offline Apps and Preparation Before the Route

Maps.me (OSM-based) and Google Maps both support offline downloads for Nepal. Download the Mustang district offline map pack while in Kathmandu or Pokhara. It covers Jomsom, Kagbeni, Jharkot, and Ranipauwa with street-level detail and trail paths. Maps.me is especially useful for the walking route sections as it includes ACAP trails not shown in Google Maps.

Download your tour confirmation, hotel booking PDFs, ACAP permit scan, and emergency contact list to your phone storage before departing Pokhara. WhatsApp works reasonably well for text even on 2G. But photo sharing and video calls require 3G minimum. Save the contact numbers of your guide, the tour operator emergency line, and the nearest hospital (Jomsom Primary Health Centre: +977-69-440005) in your phone's offline contacts.

If you require reliable connectivity for work or family coordination throughout the trip, consider renting a satellite communicator device. InReach (Garmin) and SPOT satellite messengers are available for rent from trekking equipment shops in Kathmandu's Thamel neighbourhood for approximately INR 940–1,565 per week. These devices provide two-way text messaging and GPS tracking independent of any mobile network. A meaningful safety upgrade for elderly pilgrims or those with medical conditions.
